Cleaning chemicals are acidic, alkaline or neutral. The solution’s pH (concentration of the hydrogen ion) level on a scale of 0 to 14, determines this designation. Solutions in the range of 0 to 7 are acidic. A solution with pH 7 is neutral. A pH of greater than 7 means that the solution is alkaline.
So, if the soil is light, or you need to remove water scales and minerals then go for a cleaner that has an acidic pH. But if the soil is heavy, oily or greasy then use a degreaser, as it is alkaline.
Why do greases need an alkaline solution?
Grease is organic. In other words, it comes from something living. Alkaline solutions contain highly potent bases, such as potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide that can dissolve fats, oils, grease and other protein-based deposits. The more “caked-on” grease is, the higher alkaline cleaner is needed. This is why oven cleaners are highly alkaline.
Thus, all degreasers are cleaners, but all cleaners are not degreasers.
Where do all-purpose cleaners lie in the pH spectrum?
All-purpose cleaners fall usually in the range of 6 to 8 on the pH scale. This is why, you could use them to clean dusty or lightly-soiled or non-greasy counters, desks, tables, walls and floors. At the same time, they work fairly well to remove greasy stains.
But they may not deliver you delight if you use them to clean ovens and greasy surfaces. However, this doesn’t mean you resort to degreasers for non-greasy cleaning.
